Floresca Karanàsou has been painting for almost four years and for most of that time she has been using soft pastels. She is Greek but has lived in the UK for the best part of the last 34 years, first as a student and then working for British charities managing their Middle East programmes. She is now a freelance consultant specialising on human rights and international development in the Middle East.
She regards painting as the one area in her life where she can let completely loose – the ultimate in freedom of self-expression and experimentation. Her natural instinct is always to pay attention to detail, so, in painting, she tries to do the opposite, to be reductive and abstract. There is another reason why she loves to paint: the companionship of other fellow travellers – students in art classes like Rosie McClelland’s.
Having moved from London to Glenarm, Co. Antrim in 2011 she has been painting since then the natural and lived-in environment around Glenarm. She likes to interpret what she sees in stark colours and simple shapes and has been inspired by British pastelist, Mark Leech.
